Entry requirements
To be eligible for entry, applicants will normally have undertaken four years of study at a recognised higher education institution, and successfully completed all of the requirements for each program including an education qualification. Applicants with a three year qualification would normally be expected to have three years of relevant professional experience and a Graduate Certificate of Education or equivalent. Applicants will be selected for the program on the basis of academic merit. Preference will be given to applicants with approved professional experience.
English language entry requirements
In addition, international students who speak English as a foreign language must have obtained one of the following standards within the last two years prior to admission. Possession of one or more of these qualifications, in addition to the academic entry requirements, does not, in itself, guarantee a place at the University of South Australia. Applications are considered on an individual basis and selection is competitive. Where previous study/work experience was conducted in English, the application must be accompanied by certified documentation from the educational institution/employer certifying that the language of instruction/employment was English.

Aim

The Master of Education aims to develop a critical understanding of and engagement with current theories, research, debates and practices in a variety of educational fields and education sectors through a series of courses or courses plus research.

Content & Structure

A total of 36 units are required to complete the program. Students of this program may choose to specialise in a particular area based on the following model, in which case they will graduate with a Master of Education with a specialisation on their parchment.

Specialisation: 18 units Elective: 18 units

Alternatively students may choose not to specialise in a particular area by choosing any courses from the program schedule, in which case they will graduate with a Master of Education without a specialisation on their parchments. Moreover, the program can be taken as coursework only or by a combination of coursework and an 18 unit research strand made up of 9 units of research methodology courses and 9 units of a research project.

Rules

1. Students will need to check prerequisite requirements relevant to their chosen specialisation.

2. Students are required to complete at least 18 units within a specialisation if they choose to specialise and have the specialisation recorded on their parchment.

3. Credit will not normally be granted for more than one third of the total number of units of the award. Applications for credit must be based on equivalent masters study. Students will apply for credit in the first instance to the specialisation coordinator/course coordinator who will forward their recommendation to the Program Director for approval. The Program Director will consult with specialisation coordinators and/or course coordinators, as appropriate.

Notes

1. Students considering further research studies at doctoral level should complete an 18 unit research strand: Research: 18 units made up of 9 units covering research methodology: EDUC 5094 Introduction to Research Practice or EDUC 5033 Research Methods and Issues in Language and Literacy Education; and 9 units covering a research study/project: EDUC 5017 Negotiated Study (Research) or EDUC 5032 Investigation in Language and Literacy Education or EDUC 5030 Project in Language Education or EDUC 5070/ EDUC 5071 Practitioner Inquiry 1 and 2. These 18 units can be taken as part of a specialisation or with any other 18 units of Master of Education courses. Advice will be provided to students by specialisation coordinators or the Program Director to assist them in selecting the most appropriate research methodology course.

2. Not all courses may be offered every year. Information concerning study period of offering can be accessed via the timetable on UniSAnet. For information about the scheduling of external courses students should contact the specialisation coordinator.

3. EDUC 5070 Practitioner Inquiry 1, EDUC 5071 Practitioner Inquiry 2, EDUC 5043 Policy, Curriculum and Teaching Studies 1 and EDUC 5044 Policy, Curriculum and Teaching Studies 2 are generally undertaken by students who are part of an industry-sponsored cohort in the MCED Graduate Certificate in Education and are listed in the Masters schedule to facilitate credit transfer. Students not part of an industry- sponsored cohort should contact the Course Coordinator to ascertain whether enrolment is appropriate.
