Course aim

To develop an understanding of core concepts in language, culture and second language learning, and their implications for pedagogy.

Course content

Language development as a socio-cultural activity; conceptions of language and culture; intercultural language learning;; investigating language in context (spoken and written); key concepts including language, culture, interaction, systems of linguistic meaning making, intercultural communication; variables of context, factors affecting learning, inter-language, learner differences.
