To introduce students to a key pedagogical issue in literacy education and support them to conduct an investigation of this issue in their local context.
Exploration of and response to literature related to a key pedagogical issue in the field; the manner in which this issue is played out in local and international settings; social and cultural issues which impact upon teaching; strategies for teaching and assessing literacy; program evaluation.
The special issue in literacy teaching is selected from the following, depending on availability:
Critical literacy in the classroom; literacies and new technologies; a critical language awareness approach to literacy education; literacy, poverty and social justice; boys and literacy; rural literacies; literacy learning difficulties.
Note: Students must study an issue different from that which is the focus for Literacy Teaching in Practice 2, 3 and 4.
