- Completed the equivalent secondary education qualifications as required for University entry under SACE and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements; or
- Completed the International Baccalaureate Diploma and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements; or
- Completed or partly completed a recognised higher education program at a recognised higher education institution and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements; or
- Completed at least four Open Universities Australia (OUA) courses at the appropriate level and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements; or
- Completed an award from TAFE or from another registered training organisation at AQF Certificate IV or above and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
- Qualified for Special Entry Sub-quota and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements; or
- Completed the University Foundation Studies program
Applicants are advised that a successful criminal history screening clearance is required for all students prior to their undertaking any professional experience/practicum placement that involves contact with minors (under 18 years of age). Information on the procedure to be followed for obtaining clearance will be provided with the letter of offer or may be viewed at the School of Education criminal history screening web page. These placements form a compulsory part of the program. A successful clearance may also be required for other courses, eg to enter any school, pre-school or childcare centre for any reason, including on placement, observation or visits, unless the students are already registered teachers.

Aim

To prepare intending middle/secondary school teachers as specialists in Aboriginal Studies and a second teaching area who are skilled, committed and flexible professionals with the capacities to promote effective and inclusive learning in a variety of education settings and a range of community contexts.

Content & Structure

The program is equivalent to four years of full-time study, that is 144 units.

The program includes courses in:

Aboriginal Studies (9 x 4.5 unit courses = 40.5 units);
a further sub-major or minors of the student's choice which will provide at least a second teaching area in schools (6 x 4.5 unit courses = 27 units);
Education Studies which include theoretical courses regarding learning, curriculum and the social contexts of education, reflective practice placements in schools and courses related to the curriculum and methodology of teaching the two selected Learning Areas (13 x 4.5 unit courses plus 1 x 9 unit course = 67.5 units);
1 x 4.5 unit Aboriginal Studies elective (=4.5 units);
1 x 4.5 unit Free Elective course selected from undergraduate courses across UniSA (= 4.5 units).

The emphasis in the first two years is on Aboriginal Studies with the Education Studies being emphasised in the second half of the program.

Notes

1. Students may choose to complete: - a sub-major of 27 units (6 x 4.5 unit courses) - or a minor sequence of 18 units (4 x 4.5 unit courses) and a sequence of 9 units (2 x 4.5 unit courses). These must be chosen from courses that are included under what are designated 'Learning Areas' within the schooling sector and for which courses about how to teach those learning areas are provided within this degree. Currently the learning areas in schools which can be studied at this University include: Arts (dance, drama, music or visual arts), English, Mathematics, Studies of Society and Environment (including accounting, business studies, economics, geography, history, legal studies, social studies), Design and Technology (including agriculture, home economics, information technology, design and technology), Science, or Languages other than English (LOTE) - see Note 10.

2. Students should note that employers are likely to deem a sub-major in a learning area as a necessary prerequisite for teaching that learning area to Year 12; similarly an 18 unit sequence is likely to be the requirement for teaching to Year 10 and a 9 unit sequence to year 8; students are urged to take advice from the Program Director within the School of Education before making their selection of sub-major/minor to ensure that they are choosing wisely and establishing a strong case for future employment within the teaching profession.

3. The options from which students may select 'Teaching the Second Learning Area 1 & 2' are listed above under the Electives heading. The option selected must relate to the student's choice of sub-major or minors; both courses must come from the same Learning Area; students are recommended to check their choice with the relevant Course Coordinator or Program Director.

4. EDUC 4094 Reflective Practice 1 includes 10 days of full-time activities in education settings.

5. EDUC 4043 Reflective Practice 2 includes 25 days of full-time professional experience in education settings.

6. EDUC 4055 Reflective Practice 3 includes 25 days of full-time professional experience in education settings.

7. The prerequisites for EDUC 4043 Reflective Practice 2 are EDUC 4045 Reflective Practice 1 and a total of 9 units of teaching area courses. The prerequisites for Reflective Practice 3 are EDUC 4043 Reflective Practice 2 and a total of 18 units of teaching area courses.
