Course aim

To examine Australian government policies in relation to nationalism, cultural identity and the politics of representation.

Course content

Immigration, multiculturalism and the refugee policy; the history of the ‘white’ Australia policy; the social construction of whiteness and representations of whiteness in contemporary Australia; the media and national identity; racism and the media; anti-discrimination and anti-vilification legislation; fear and the politics of representation; Australia and Asian relations.
