Aim

Students pursuing the Bachelor of Arts (Cultural Studies) will join an academic discipline that aims to equip them with distinct but mutually reinforcing skills of cultural contextualisation and analysis, developed in the context of research based on real world problems. The sophisticated interdisciplinary approach of integrating cultural critique and research methodologies serves to expand and deepen students’ conceptualisation of the complex and diverse economic, cultural, social, historical and political legacies upon which local, national and global communities rest.

Students studying in this major will graduate with: a sophisticated body of knowledge regarding culture and its varied contexts of practice; a strong interdisciplinary research and project management skills, which will equip them as lifelong learners, sophisticated and accomplished thinkers in professional settings; and prepare interested students for higher degree study in cultural studies – one of UniSA’s areas of above world class standard research strength.

Content & Structure

Graduates of the Bachelor of Arts (Cultural Studies) will be equipped with a broad and coherent body of knowledge in the trans-disciplinary tradition of cultural analysis, informed by cultural, social, political and historical concerns. This tradition will provide students with skills for investigating contemporary, real world problems, informed by fresh cultural awareness, nuanced cultural studies discourse and practical yet sophisticated project research skills. The program will nurture many transferrable skills, not least the ability to analyse critically and in context, to interpret and weigh evidence, to ask and answer relevant questions, to explain and substantiate varying perspectives, and in all of this to communicate fluidly and effectively.

Graduates will have a second Arts major to expand their technical, analytical and communicative skills essential for practice in the professional environments and further learning in a culturally diverse global marketplace.

Students will complete 108 units of study comprising 9 units of core courses, 36 units of an Arts specialisation, 36 units of a second Arts major, 18 units of a minor, and 9 units of electives.
