Aim

The Bachelor of Arts (Screen Studies) equips graduates with a comprehensive body of knowledge relating to the production, reception and analysis of screen media. Through a dedicated focus on film, television and digital media, students will develop high-level analytic and critical thinking capacities, research, writing and communication skills and broad practical knowledge that can be applied to a range of media and professional work within the creative industries. Graduates will develop research and project management skills enabling
them to pursue further learning in honours and higher degree research or postgraduate studies in teaching.

Content & Structure

Graduates will exhibit a high-level understanding of the historic and contemporary contexts that inform film, television and digital media. This includes the study of Hollywood, different national cinemas, film history, film and television genres, screen media authorship, popular culture, experimental media practices and the rise of digital and mobile media, as well as how different screen media formats are creatively produced and received. Alongside the development of core academic writing, research and screen criticism skills, students will develop practical skill-sets that allow them to create and analyse content across a range of media platforms and to effectively communicate and problem-solve within professional industry contexts.

Graduates will also have a second Arts major to expand their technical, analytical and communicative skills essential for practice in the professional environments and further learning in a culturally diverse global marketplace.

Students will complete 108 units of study comprising 9 units of core courses, 36 units of an Arts specialisation, 36 units of a second Arts major, 18 units of a minor, and 9 units of electives.
