Course aim

Students will develop an understanding of an array of popular culture sites and texts.

Course content

Understanding Popular Culture will expose students to an array of popular culture sites and texts. In so doing, it will offer an enhanced understanding of how the pleasure of engaging popular culture intersects with questions of gender, sexuality, race & ethnicity, class, age and other sources of making sense of culture and identity. Students will consider topics such as superheroes, social media & selfie culture, bogans, contemporary Aboriginal comedy, reality TV, manga, comics and the role of social networking platforms such as Snapchat, Instagram, Renren and online dating apps.
