Aim

To prepare graduates from a range of disciplines for advanced practice, policy development and research in areas involving conflict.

Content & Structure

To qualify for the Master of Mediation and Conflict Resolution students must have completed the equivalent of 54 units. This can be completed by coursework or a combination of coursework and field practice. Students must complete at least two core courses and at least four of the specified generic course options plus courses for their area(s) of specialisation.

Rules & notes

Rules

1. No course which is substantially equivalent to a course taken in gaining another award may be included in the program of study.

2. Graduate Diploma students are required to complete two Core courses, at least four Generic courses and up to two courses from their chosen Specialisation.

3. The Graduate Diploma in Mediation and Conflict Resolution nests into the Master of Mediation and Conflict Resolution. Holders of the Graduate Diploma can complete the Master of Mediation and Conflict Resolution by completing courses worth an additional 18 units. Students already holding a Graduate Certificate in Mediation (18 units) or a Graduate Diploma in Mediation and Conflict Resolution or a Graduate Diploma in Conflict Management (36 units) will be eligible for credit for the commensurate number of units in the Master of Mediation and Conflict Resolution.

4. 18 units of credit will be granted for the Graduate Certificate in Legal Practice or the Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice awarded by this University. Credit of up to one third of the program may be granted at the discretion of the Program Director for completed postgraduate courses with substantial content deemed relevant to Mediation and Conflict Resolution.

Notes

1. The core course WELF 5081 Mediation Theory and Practice is a prerequisite for WELF 5082 Advanced Mediation Theory and Practice.

2. Students choosing Specialisation A: Family must complete two of the specified courses in First Year. They are also advised to choose WELF 5059 Interpersonal Violence from the Generic Course list. Where family law or children are not the student's focus another relevant course can be selected with permission from the Program Director and the Course Coordinator, for example a postgraduate course on Ageing.

3. Students choosing Specialisation B: Workplace Relations must complete WELF 5085 Managing Conflicts in the Workplace and one of the other specified courses in First Year.

4. Students choosing Specialisation C: International Relations must choose two courses from the courses in the Graduate Diploma in International Studies (MGIL) and are advised to choose HUMS 5020 Culture and Disputing from the Generic Course list.

5. In their Second Year, Master of Mediation and Conflict Resolution students can choose to complete the final 18 units of the award either entirely by coursework or by a combination of coursework and WELF 5083 Conflict Management Field Practice.

6. Option 2: the four courses may be selected from any of the specialisation courses scheduled in the First Year of the program. Other relevant postgraduate courses in the University may be chosen with the permission of the Program Director.
