Course aim

To advance students’ knowledge of theoretical concepts and skills underlying a range of approaches to mediation in a variety of settings.

Course content

Conflict theory; competition and cooperation; conflict handling styles; principled and positional negotiation; dispute resolution processes; the mediator role; the legal and cultural context of mediation; strengths and limitations of mediation; the characteristics and functions of a mediator; pre-mediation and selective screening; third party impartiality and neutrality; the mediation process, concepts and skills: analysing conflict; framing issues; generating options; designing intervention strategies to promote cooperation; resolving impasses; assisting negotiation, achieving fair outcomes; writing agreements; advocacy, mediation and therapy; language, culture,gender and mediation; power, abuses of power and empowerment; conflict coaching; ethical issues and standards.
