At least a three year degree from a recognised higher education institution or equivalent.

Applicants are advised that a successful criminal history screening clearance is required for all students prior to their undertaking any professional experience/practicum placement that involves contact with minors (under 18 years of age). Information on the procedure to be followed for obtaining clearance will be provided with the letter of offer or may be viewed at the School of Education criminal history screening web page. These placements form a compulsory part of the program. A successful clearance may also be required for other courses, eg to enter any school, pre-school or childcare centre for any reason, including on placement, observation or visits, unless the students are already registered teachers.

Aim

To prepare graduates with an existing degree in another field to work in a diverse and changing range of services for the education and care of children from birth to eight years of age.

Content & Structure

The 72 unit program is made up of 16 x 4.5 unit courses taken by students over two years, or the part-time equivalent. The program includes studies in curriculum, child development, professional experience and one education study Education, Change and Society that comprises the compulsory Indigenous study. The program provides a balance between professional experience, curriculum and child development studies. The award comprises the following: 1 education studies course, 3 child development courses, 8 curriculum courses covering all currently defined learning areas, and 4 Professional Experience courses, one in each study period of the program.

From 4 August 2025, the University of South Australia will no longer be accepting applications for new students. Study at Adelaide University.

Rules

1. Students are offered either full-time study over 2 years or the part-time equivalent.

2. This program is only offered in the internal mode. Although some courses appear to be offered externally on the web, external enrolment is restricted to particular cohorts of undergraduate students only.

Notes

1. Students are required to take the four Professional Experience courses in sequence, EDUC 1044 Professional Experience 1 (Birth to 3 Years), EDUC 2026 Professional Experience 2 (3 to 5 Years), EDUC 3022 Professional Experience 3 (5 to 8 Years) and EDUC 1040 Professional Experience 4 (5 to 8 Years). Students may not take them out of order as each is a prerequisite for the one following it.

2. EDUC 1044 Professional Experience 1 (Birth to 3 Years) includes 22 full days of professional experience placement. EDUC 2026 Professional Experience 2 (3 to 5 Years) includes 29 full days of professional experience placement. EDUC 3022 Professional Experience 3 (5 to 8 Years) includes 25 full days of professional experience placement. EDUC 1040 Professional Experience 4 (5 to 8 Years) includes 25 full days of professional experience placement.

3. Prior to the EDUC 1044 Professional Experience 1 (Birth to 3 Years) block, students must obtain the appropriate current First Aid certificate, BELS (Basic Emergency Life Support).

4. Prior to the EDUC 1044 Professional Experience 1 (Birth to 3 Years) first professional experience visit students must have completed the one day Mandated Notification Training module developed by The Department for Family and Youth Services.

5. All Professional Experience days and blocks must be taken full time even if students are studying in part-time mode.
