Environmental Science and Geospatial Science students at UniSA are sought to participate in Community Service learning at the Department for Environment and Water (DEW).

Students will assist the Ranger at the Gawler DEW office in tasks relating to the management of the Adelaide International Bird Sanctuary (AIBS).

The AIBS National Park – Winaityinaityi Pangkara (Kaurna meaning ‘a country for all birds and the country that surrounds the birds’) includes 60km of coastline and is a unique habitat for 27,000 shorebirds, many of which migrate from as far as Siberia.

Projects tasks will be negotiated in consultation with the Ranger and may include:

  • Development of educational resources for schools
  • A virtual tour of the AIBS
  • Mapping of trails
  • Developing signage
  • Developing public participation in monitoring through CoastSnap

Parra Wirra Conservation Park

Another project opportunity is available for students at the Parra Wirra Conservation Park, where DEW has a new parcel of land. The vegetation consists of Red Gum Woodland. DEW is looking at maintaining the open woodlands structure.  Students would be mapping old red gums and an on ground assessment of each one. Using GIS, students will undertake a desktop analysis to determine the location of the large Red Gums DEW wants to target, then undertake a survey of each of these trees in regards to health, hollows and surrounding vegetation.
