Data scientists are in increasing demand1 as more and more organisations seek to analyse and interpret vast amounts of data and make sure it is used in intelligent, valuable ways.

This degree is designed to produce job-ready graduates to meet this industry need, and to fill the growing range of work opportunities in the market. Successful maths and data scientists draw on skills from a range of complementary disciplines, so this degree offers a balanced mix of mathematics, information technology and data science. In your final year you’ll complete an industry-based project to experience real-world challenges and gain workplace experience.

You will graduate ready to work in a data science role in industry or the public sector. Because data science is also a tool that supports research across an increasing range of disciplines, you could also choose to continue with a Bachelor of Applied Science (Honours) (Industrial and Applied Mathematics), a Bachelor of Information Technology (Honours), a Master of Data Science or eventually a PhD.

Flexible study opportunities are available, you can study full-time or part-time, and some courses are available online.

What you'll learn

What you Learn

In first year you’ll study core subjects in maths and IT. You will focus on building your mathematical and programming skills with courses that include calculus, statistical methods, fundamentals of programming, and databases.

You will then move into your applied data science studies. You’ll study cross-disciplinary areas such as web development, data structures and mathematical communication, and mathematical modelling.

In third year you’ll combine study and hands-on experience with courses in programming and networking, project management, and analytics. You will also complete an ICT industry-based project to strengthen your abilities in research, analysis, and interpretation of data.

You can gain an extra qualification and broaden your career prospects by completing a Diploma in Languages.

Study hours

For each course you study, you will need to allocate time for various classes such as lectures, tutorials, workshops, seminars and practicals. Plus you will need additional hours to study in your own time to complete assignments, readings and projects and contribute to online discussion forums (independent study). So as a general rule, if you are studying full-time you would need to allocate 12 – 26 hours of study when at university and 14 – 28 hours of independent study per week.

Why this Degree

Maths degrees at UniSA share a common first year. Therefore at the end of first year, you can change to the Industrial and Applied Mathematics specialisation if you wish, and retain credits for the courses you’ve already done.

UniSA’s School of Information Technology & Mathematical Sciences is the largest information and communications technology provider in South Australia. It is regarded as one of the leading Applied Mathematics departments in Australia -  we are the national headquarters for an $88 million CRC in big data. It places UniSA at the forefront of industry and academic research collaboration.

If you wish to taken on additional studies after graduation, UniSA offers a Master in Data Science which provides graduates with the analytical and technical skills to effectively extract useful information from Big Data to support the management and operations of an organisation. 

Our world-class facilities at Mawson Lakes campus offer an inspiring learning environment such as the multi-million dollar Materials and Minerals Science Learning and Research Hub. Our students also benefit from UniSA’s lead role in the $88 million Data to Decisions Cooperative Research Centre.

Cooperative Research Centres

We are also proud to support a number of Cooperative Research Centres (CRC) bringing together researchers and research users, with an emphasis on collaboration through utilisation, commercialisation and technology transfer.

We are home to the Centre for Applied and Industrial Mathematics, where researchers in pure and applied mathematics work together to discover, understand and interpret natural phenomena and apply mathematics to important industrial and social problems. The Centre also seeks to develop new research strengths in maths and statistics and train the next generation of mathematical scientists.

We also have the Defence and Systems Institute, which conducts research in the design, integration, and modelling of complex Defence and Engineering Systems.

As well as research, they also provide consulting services to organisations and government. All have state-of-the-art facilities with world renowned links and associations that provide a dynamic teaching and research base for our students.

UniSA is also the national headquarters for an $88 million CRC in big data. The Data to Decisions CRC is set to boost national security. It places UniSA at the forefront of industry and academic research collaboration. The CRC involves researchers in areas of computer science, engineering, business and law from UniSA, the University of Adelaide, University of New South Wales, Deakin University and Carnegie Mellon University, with industry input from IT and systems integration companies, consulting companies and SMEs in collaboration with state and federal national security agencies.

We also host regular University-wide employee master classes and employment expos, and alumni events in Australia and overseas.

Analytics, maths, science, data, and reasoning are becoming embedded into decision-making processes, every day and everywhere in the business world1.

Careers to consider:

  • big data visualiser: using visualisation software to analyse data, drawing implications and communicating findings; providing input on database requirements for reporting/analytics; acquiring, managing and documenting data (e.g. geo-spatial); creating visualisations from data or GIS data analysis
  • data scientist: understanding interfaces, data migrations, big data and databases; taking the lead in processing raw data and determining the best types of analysis; mining large volumes of data to understand user behaviours and interactions; communicating data findings to IT leadership and business leaders to promote innovation
  • big data researcher: extracting data from relational databases; manipulating and exploring data using quantitative, statistical and visualisation tools; selecting appropriate modelling techniques so predictive models are developed using rigorous statistical processes; maintaining effective processes for validating and updating predictive models

As well as doing research in mathematics, I am also interested in improving the way mathematics is communicated to students and the public in general. My research interests include partial differential equations, analysis, and probability.
