Admission criteria

The admission criteria have been grouped to assist you to easily find the information most relevant to your circumstances. However, you may fit into more than one and the university will consider applicants against each of the relevant criteria.

Certain conditions apply. For more information refer to Appendix 4 of the University's Selection and Entry policy.

To be eligible for selection, applicants are required to have:

Completed the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE); and
- completed 200 credits of subjects;
- achieved a grade of C* or better in the Personal Learning Plan, 20 credits of literacy, 10 credits of numeracy and the Research Project at Stage 2;
- achieved a grade C- or better in an additional 60 credits at Stage 2;
- obtained a competitive ATAR.
* For Stage 2 subjects a grade of C- or better is required
OR:
- completed the equivalent secondary education qualifications as required for University entry under SACE and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
- completed the International Baccalaureate Diploma, obtaining a minimum score of 24 points and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
- completed or partly completed a recognised higher education program at a recognised higher education institution and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
- completed at least four Open Universities Australia (OUA) courses at the appropriate level and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
- completed an award from TAFE or from another registered training organisation at AQF Diploma level or above and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
- qualified for Special Entry and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
- completed the University Foundation Studies program.

Aim

The program aims to prepare professionally competent graduates who understand: the moral, ethical and political dimensions of teaching and the teaching profession; the diversity of communities in which they will work and the need to be guided by principles of social and ecological justice as they effect positive changes in students' lives.

Content & Structure

The program is equivalent to four years of full-time study, that is, 144 units. The program includes Education studies, Learning Area studies, General Studies and Professional Experience courses.

Rules

1. Students will be selected into the Honours stream in accordance with University policy. In the fourth year Honours students will take EDUC 4203 Education Honours A (including 20 days of Professional Experience) and EDUC 4204 Education Honours B in place of the Professional Option, the Free Elective and EDUC 4056 Professional Applications and Reflection 4 (Primary, Middle) (PAR 4).

2. Professional Experience courses: The prerequisites for EDUC 2011 Professional Applications and Reflection 2 (Primary, Middle) (PAR 2) are EDUC 1022 Professional Applications and Reflection 1 (Primary, Middle) (PAR 1) and 18 units of Learning Area courses (see Note 3). The prerequisites for EDUC 3048 Professional Applications and Reflection 3 (Primary, Middle) PAR 3 are EDUC 2011 Professional Applications and Reflection 2 (Primary, Middle) PAR 2 and 31.5 units of Learning Area courses (see Note 6). The pre/corequisites for EDUC 4056 Professional Applications and Reflection 4 (Primary, Middle) PAR 4 are EDUC 3048 Professional Applications and Reflection 3(Primary, Middle) a Professional Option(see Note 2) and 36 units of Learning Area courses.

3. Learning Area courses: The prerequisite for EDUC 4143 Studies in Science and Mathematics Education 2 is EDUC 4141 Studies in Science and Mathematics Education 1. The prerequisite for EDUC 2046 English Language and Literacy is EDUC 1063 Language and Multiliteracies. The prerequisites for EDUC 4140 English and Mathematics are EDUC 4143 Studies in Science and Mathematics 2 and EDUC 2046 English Language and Literacy.

4. General Study: Primary and Middle students are required by their program to undertake 8 general studies courses. These will normally be taken as two minors (4 x 4.5). General studies courses prepare students to teach two learning areas as a teacher in years 8 and 9 and/or to take up the role of a curriculum leader in a Primary School. Learning areas align with subject areas taught in schools e.g.: Society and Environment, English, Mathematics, The Arts (Visual and Performing), Science, Technology (including Design and Technology, IT, Home Economics), Languages, Health and PE. There are some cross-curricular areas that may also be taken including Teaching English as a Second Language, Lutheran studies or Catholic studies. 5. Other course prerequisites: The prerequisite for EDUC 3055 Inclusive Education: Students with Special Needs is EDUC 4157 Approaches to Learning and EDUC 3048 Professional Applications and Reflection 3. The prerequisites for EDUC 4202 Numeracy: Issues in Mathematics and Science Education are EDUC 3048 Professional Applications and Reflection 3 and EDUC 4140 English and Mathematics.

Notes

1. Professional Experience courses called Professional Applications and Reflection 1, 2, 3 and 4 (Primary, Middle) In the LBPM program are sometimes described as PAR 1, 2, 3, 4. The first year course (PAR 1) will provide opportunities for students to be involved in a whole of school setting and to observe how a school operates from the perspective of an educator. The second year course (PAR 2) provides students with further opportunities to take on more responsibilities as educators. Students will usually be placed in pairs in a classroom enabling shared planning and reflection. In their third year, students undertake a 9 unit course (PAR 3) and spend six weeks in a school undertaking a full range of teaching duties. This professional experience is linked with EDUC 4162 Middle Schooling for the Middle Years and EDUC 4140 English and Mathematics courses that run in the same study period. In the fourth year students will be required to take a Professional Option course in SP2 that is linked to the Professional experience course (PAR 4) undertaken in SP5. In this final professional experience course students will have the opportunity to teach their learning area specialisation in a middle school setting (years 6-9).

2. 3. The Professional Option is an elective course designed to further develop one of two Learning Areas. Students must have completed at least 3 General Studies in this area of specialisation. A list of options will be included in the student program handbook.
