To be eligible for selection, applicants are required to have:
Completed the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE); and
* For Stage 2 subjects a grade of C- or better is required
OR:
Applicants are advised that a successful criminal history screening clearance is required for all students prior to their undertaking any professional experience/practicum placement that involves contact with minors (under 18 years of age). Information on the procedure to be followed for obtaining clearance will be provided with the letter of offer or may be viewed at the School of Education criminal history screening web page. These placements form a compulsory part of the program. A successful clearance may also be required for other courses, eg to enter any school, pre-school or childcare centre for any reason, including on placement, observation or visits, unless the students are already registered teachers.
This program requires the completion of 144 units of study over four years full-time or equivalent part-time. Students may choose to specialise in either Design Technology Education or Home Economics Education options. Opportunity is also provided for study across both specialisations if desired. Students will be expected to study across a range of educational settings including TAFE SA: Adelaide and Regency campuses (credit for these courses will be granted by UniSA ), University of South Australia: School of Education, Magill and Mawson Lakes campus, School of Mechanical Engineering (Mawson Lakes Campus) and School of Art, Architecture and Design (City West Campus).
Throughout the program students will undertake school placement practicums in Middle School and Secondary settings. Applicants need to ensure they can fulfil the full-time commitment required during the placements.

1. The degree may be awarded with Honours for meritorious performance. Students will be selected in accordance with University policy. Honours students will enrol in EDUC 4203 Education Honours A (including 20 days of Professional Experience) in place of MENG 2010 CADD CAM Principles and Practice and Elective 3, and EDUC 4204 Education Honours B in place of EDUC 4056 Professional Applications and Reflection 4 (Primary, Middle) - in Fourth Year.
1. Students enrol in the TAFE courses concurrently. Students should apply for external credit on completion of each TAFE course.
2. Students in the Design and Technology strand will be granted 36 units of credit in total, on the successful completion of the eight TAFE courses. TAFE fees apply.
3. Electives may be selected from minors within any relevant undergraduate program (see Majors/sub-majors/minors link above) or TAFE courses currently offered in the LBDT program in consultation with the Program Director. Health and Physical Education courses are not offered as electives in the LBDT program.
4. The TAFE courses for the Design and Technology strand are as follows: First Year: TAFE Course 1 Materials Technology (Furniture Construction 1) / TAFE Course 2 Materials Technology (Wood Machining 1) / TAFE Course 3 Fitting and Machining (Sheet Metal); Second Year: TAFE Course 4 Materials Technology (Furniture Construction 2) / TAFE Course 5 Materials Technology (Welding) / TAFE Course 6 Systems Technology (Electronics 1); Third Year: TAFE Course 7 Materials Technology (Machining) / TAFE Course 8 SystemsTechnology (Electronics 2).
5. The following existing units of Competence and Performance Criteria are to be studied through the relevant Institute of TAFE SA (see Notes 6 - 13). Students will be granted credit if they have already completed these units or their equivalent in these or other relevant Design and Technology areas.
6. TAFE Course 1: Materials Technology (Furniture Construction 1) comprises LMFCR0001A: Follow safe working policies and practices, EGDB (LMFFM2001B): Use furniture making sector power and hand tools, EGCF (LMFFF2004B): Prepare surfaces for finishing.
7. TAFE Course 2: Materials Technology (Wood Machining 1) comprises EGDM (LMFFM2010B: Setup, operate and maintain basic static machines, EGAC (LMFCR0003B): Carry out measures and calculations.
8. TAFE Course 3: Fitting and Machining comprises MEM2.1C12A: Apply quality systems, MEM18.1A: Use hand tools, MEM18.2A: Use power tools, hand held operations, MEM3.3A: Sheet and Plate assembly.
9. TAFE Course 4: Materials Technology (Furniture Construction 2) comprises LMFFM3011: Produce manual and computer aided production drawings, EGDC (LMFFM2002B): Assemble furnishing components , EGDG (LMFFM2006b): Hand made timber joints, EGDN (LMFFM2011B): Apply manufactured board conversion techniques.
10. TAFE Course 5: Materials Technology (Welding) comprises MEM5.50M: Gas metal arc, MEM5.12M: Manual metal arc, MEM5.4A: Perform routine oxy acetylene welding, MEM2.5C11: Measuring using graduated devices.
11. TAFE Course 6: Systems Technology (Electronics 1) comprises NUE052: Applied Electricity, NUE054: Applied Electricity 2, Perform Milling Operations (particular competencies), NUE056: Applied Electricity 4, NE172: Electrical Wiring and Equipment.
12. TAFE Course 7: Materials Technology (Machining Practices) comprises MEM7.5A: Perform General Machining (80), MEM7.7A: Perform Milling Operations (particular competencies) (40).
13. TAFE Course 8: Systems Technology (Electronics 2) comprises E004: Solve problems in DC, E020: Provide basic instructions in the use of electrotech apparatus, K042: Participate in environmentally sustainable work practices.
14. All students complete at least one Free Elective as part of their undergraduate program of study. See undergraduate elective courses.
