Admission criteria

The admission criteria have been grouped to assist you to easily find the information most relevant to your circumstances. However, you may fit into more than one and the university will consider applicants against each of the relevant criteria.

To be eligible for selection, applicants are required to have:

Completed the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE); and
- completed 200 credits of subjects;
- achieved a grade of C* or better in the Personal Learning Plan, 20 credits of literacy, 10 credits of numeracy and the Research Project at Stage 2;
- achieved a grade C- or better in an additional 60 credits at Stage 2;
- obtained a competitive ATAR.
* For Stage 2 subjects a grade of C- or better is required
OR:
- completed the equivalent secondary education qualifications as required for University entry under SACE and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
- completed the International Baccalaureate Diploma, obtaining a minimum score of 24 points and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
- completed or partly completed a recognised higher education program at a recognised higher education institution and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
- completed at least four Open Universities Australia (OUA) courses at the appropriate level and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
- completed an award from TAFE or from another registered training organisation at AQF Diploma level or above and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
- qualified for Special Entry and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
- completed the Health Sciences stream of the University Foundation Studies program.

New Program

Aim

The program aims to cover the required knowledge and skill criteria for graduates to submit an individual application for accreditation as an Exercise Physiologist for consideration by Exercise & Sports Science Australia (ESSA).

Content & Structure

This program is structured around a core of required courses (totaling 117 units) and elective courses (totaling 27 units). The degree requires completion of courses comprising 144 units.

The core courses provide for theory, practical and clinical based learning, foundational studies in exercise science including areas such as anatomy and physiology, biomechanics, motor learning and control, exercise and sport psychology, exercise programming and nutrition. Students then complete specialised clinical training in areas such as pathophysiology, clinical exercise assessment and prescription and occupational rehabilitation in order to be qualified to deliver exercise management for a range of cardiovascular, respiratory, metabolic, musculoskeletal, neurologic and cancer conditions.

Rules

1. All students in the Division of Health Sciences who, as part of their program, undertake activities where interaction with patients / the public is required, such as in field or clinical placements / visits and in University clinics and gyms, must demonstrate that they have a Department for Communities and Social Inclusion National Criminal History Record Check, which will be current for the duration of that activity. Interstate student placements require a National Police Certificate.

2. Students will be required to satisfy the standard of dress, behaviour and fitness prescribed by institutions in which the professional or clinical placements are undertaken. Failure to satisfy such requirements may prevent them satisfying the requirements for the completion of the program.

3. Students are required to have a current Senior First Aid Certificate (or equivalent) and current cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training certificate prior to the commencement of their first placement. The first aid certificate is to be updated every 3 years and the CPR certificate updated every 12 months. Students will need to cover cost associated with these certifications.

4. Students will be required to undertake a Certificate of Mandatory Notification before commencing their first placement. Students will need to cover cost associated with this certification.

5. Prior to commencing the clinical component of this program, students must demonstrate completion of a minimum of 140 hours relevant and appropriately supervised exercise practicum as per practicum logbook guidelines established by Exercise & Sport Science Australia. Practicum experience must include exercise delivery for low risk and apparently healthy clients. These practicum hours must include a minimum of 60% (at least 84 hours) for face to face delivery of exercise services.

6. To complete this program, students must provide evidence of 500 hours of appropriately supervised (as per Exercise & Sports Science Australia guidelines) practicum including: 1. a minimum of 140 hours of exercise delivery practicum gained with apparently healthy clients; 2. a minimum of 140 hours neuromuscular / neurological / musculoskeletal clinical exercise practicum; 3. a minimum of 140 hours metabolic / cardiopulmonary clinical exercise practicum; and 4. a maximum of 80 other clinical hours clinical exercise practicum from other clinical or chronic conditions. Activities that are suitable for practicum include; 1. a minimum of 60% (at least 215 hours) for face to face delivery of exercise services; 2. a maximum of 35% (up to 125 hours) for preparation for exercise delivery, observation and other activities related to the scope of practice of AEPs; and 3. a maximum of 5% (up to 20 hours) for administrative tasks. Failure to satisfy these practicum requirements may prevent students from meeting course requirements and hence the completion of the program and the University will take such action as appropriate.

Notes

1. Students will be required to undergo pre-exercise screening with the School of Health Sciences prior to commencing the degree to ensure safe readiness to participate in physical activity or exercise related learning activities.

2. Students may be required to undergo a medical examination before commencing clinical placements as determined by the relevant hospital or placement authorities.

3. Students are advised that they may be required to spend time in a placement outside Adelaide in a country or interstate location.

4. Students may be required to undertake placement outside normal university teaching weeks and outside of normal business hours.

5. Students are advised that a current South Australian driver's license may be required by some field practice agencies and a driver's license is considered an advantage for field practice opportunities.

6. It is recommended that students meet the vaccination requirements for health professionals prior to commencing the program. Failure to meet vaccination requirements may limit placement opportunities.

7. Students are advised that some courses assess participation in practicals, tutorials and workshops.

8. Electives 1 and 2 must be chosen from Group 1 Electives or from other courses negotiated with the Program Director.

9. Elective 3 is a free elective selected by the student.
