Admission criteria

The admission criteria have been grouped to assist you to easily find the information most relevant to your circumstances. However, you may fit into more than one and the university will consider applicants against each of the relevant criteria.

Certain conditions apply. For more information refer to Appendix 4 of the University's Selection and Entry policy.

Applicants are required to meet one of the following criteria with a competitive result, and demonstrate that they fulfil any prerequisite requirements and essential requirements for admission:

Recent secondary education
Meet any prerequisite requirements with a minimum grade of C- or equivalent
AND

Qualify for the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE), and achieved a competitive Selection Rank (ATAR), or
Complete secondary qualifications equivalent to SACE, or
Complete the International Baccalaureate Diploma with a minimum score of 24 points

Applicants who have not achieved the Selection Rank required for automatic selection may be selected for any remaining places based on the grades of their year 12 subjects.

Complete or partly complete a recognised higher education program at a recognised higher education institution, or

What you'll need

All students studying a health-related program where interaction with the public is required, such as clinical placements in health settings, must meet certain compulsory requirements.

All nursing students must confirm they meet the "Fitness to Practice in Clinical Placements" requirements upon entry to their programs and on each re-enrolment, as well as meeting mandatory pre-placement conditional requirements. Please visit the Clinical Placement Unit page for more information.

All students enrolled in a program leading to professional registration must be registered with the relevant national board. The student registration process is completed by the University with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) after enrolment. No fees apply.

Students may elect to study this program externally by enrolling in the Bachelor of Nursing (External) degree. However, you must must attend mandatory on-campus workshops and undertake all clinical placements in South Australia.

What you'll learn

Nursing and midwifery lab

The Bachelor of Nursing prepares you for placement and your professional nursing career with more than 150 hours of hands-on learning in our Horizon Hospital and Health Service. You’ll also complete 1,000 hours in clinical settings across metro, regional and rural hospitals, and health services in South Australia.

During your studies, your learning will enable you to meet the seven interconnecting Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia Registered Nurse standards for practice, which include the capacity to:

think critically and analyse nursing practice
engage in therapeutic and professional relationships
maintain the capability for practice
comprehensively conduct assessments
develop a plan for nursing practice
provide safe, appropriate and responsive quality nursing practice
evaluate outcomes to inform nursing practice

The degree is designed to prepare you to meet healthcare delivery requirements for the 21^st century and respond to Australian and international healthcare priorities and trends including mental health, primary healthcare and healthy ageing. Rules

1. The Bachelor of Nursing is an undergraduate degree accredited by the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC) as a qualification leading to entry to the Register of Nurses with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA). The program accreditation requires students to complete the program in three years full-time or up to six years part-time.

2. All students must confirm that they meet the "Fitness to Practice in Clinical Placements" requirements upon entry to the program, on each reenrolment, and as may be required by the Program Director.

3. Students in this program are required to be registered with the NMBA. Students who are refused registration, or who have their registration rescinded, will be unable to continue in the program.

4. Students who are subject to an investigation by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulatory Agency (AHPRA) under the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law Act cannot participate in Clinical Placements until the investigation is complete and the University is notified of the outcome.

5. Upon entry to the program, students must provide a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check issued within the prior 12 month period from an ACIC Accredited provider.

6. Students must demonstrate full compliance with the program's Compulsory Conditional Evidence Requirements prior to allocation of a Clinical Placement. The requirements, which are updated regularly, are published on the program homepage and include a Working With Children Check (WWCC), NDIS worker check, evidence of immunisation/vaccination status, and professional training.

7. Clinical placements are an integral component of the program and are normally undertaken in health agencies in South Australia. Interstate students who accept an offer will be required to acknowledge that their placements will be based in South Australia.

8. All students are required to complete placements in diverse settings, including metropolitan, regional, and rural/remote areas. Regardless of study mode, whether full-time, part-time, internal, or external, all students must attend clinical placements full-time. This includes participating in shift work according to a 24-hour, 7-day roster, which covers early, late, and night shifts.

9. Students must practice in accordance with all UniSA policies and procedures and NMBA professional standards. When undertaking Clinical Placement outside of Australia students must also comply with any local standards for practice.

10. Students are required to satisfy the standard of dress, behaviour and fitness for practice as prescribed by institutions in which clinical placements are undertaken. This also applies to students undertaking Horizon Hospital and Health Service (HHHS) activities.

11. Students who have completed a leave of absence and/or not engaged in a Experiential Learning Activity (ELA) course in the previous 12 month period will be required to undertake an 'IBNU Compulsory Module' for which a fee will be charged.

12. Diploma of Nursing (Enrolled/Division 2 Nursing) graduates, registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) without restrictions on their license and with a current practicing certificate will be eligible for 36 units of block credit transfer into the Bachelor of Nursing.

Notes

1. Students with a disability or chronic health condition may be able to have reasonable adjustments made to teaching and learning, assessment, clinical placement, and other activities. Reasonable adjustments should not fundamentally change the nature of the "Fitness to Practice in Clinical Placements" requirements.

2. Where a clinical placement provider requests that a student be assessed directly by a University staff member, the student may be required to attend a placement in metropolitan Adelaide.

3. Students are required to attend compulsory on-campus workshops/seminars for these courses.

4. Attendance requirements apply to the clinical components of the program. Students enrolled in courses with a clinical component will need to attend on a full-time basis for the duration of the placement.

Study hours

For each course you study, you’ll need to allocate time for various classes such as lectures, tutorials, workshops, seminars and practicals. Plus, you’ll need additional hours to study in your own time to complete assignments, readings and projects and contribute to online discussion forums (independent study). As a general rule, if you are studying full-time you would need to allocate on average 40 hours per week.

There are four delivery options for the Bachelor of Nursing. Studying at our City East campus, this program delivery has a blend of on-campus and online study, and mandatory on-campus attendance at City East for practical components such as workshops. You'll get to learn in our simulated clinical environment, the Horizon Hospital and Health Service, located on our City East, Mount Gambier and Whyalla campuses.

Our state-of-the-art facilities include a fully equipped emergency department and day surgery, all led by practising Registered Nurses and Midwives (clinicians). Housed in the simulated hospital environment are the Residents of Horizon – interactive manikins each with their own persona and health concerns, as well as real people acting as residents, who have their own personal stories, relationships and health histories.

These teaching facilities and study spaces are designed to enhance and support your understanding of nursing practice as it continues to evolve, and provide a safe learning environment to practice your skills before stepping into placement and practice.

I am an experienced Registered Nurse and academic, which informs my role as Program Director of Nursing. I have worked in a variety of clinical settings across South Australia, particularly in Acute Care and Emergency Care, while my research background focuses on improving patient outcomes through early and informed decision-making and early identification of disease.

I understand the importance of connecting theory with practice, and I am committed to student-centred learning. I aim to ensure our students get the most out of their studies and can confidently and expertly meet the needs of their future patients.

How do I apply?

There are a number of ways to apply to study UniSA's undergraduate and postgraduate coursework degrees.

You can access our online International Application System through our How to Apply page. The International Application System is an easy and secure online application and acceptance process. You will have visibility of your application through the secure online portal with the ability to download offer documents, submit your acceptance and make a payment.

Alternatively you can submit an application through one of the University's registered Education Agents.

If you are completing an Australian year 12 qualification in Australia or overseas, or the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme in Australia, you must apply through SATAC http://www.satac.edu.au/.

Is there a closing date for applications?

There is no closing date for submitting your application however the admissions process takes between one and three weeks from the date that we receive your application and all required supporting documentation.

If you are completing an Australian year 12 qualification in Australia or overseas, or the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme in Australia, you must apply through SATAC. Key dates for applications can be found here.
What credit can I receive for previous studies?

You may be eligible to receive credit or advanced standing for your chosen UniSA degree based on your previous studies, if they are in a related area at an equivalent or higher level. Receiving credit will reduce the number of courses you undertake within the degree, and may also reduce the overall duration of your degree.

The amount of credit you may be eligible to receive is assessed on a case-by-case basis by the Admissions team.

I was glad that I made the decision to study at the University of South Australia. They have a very good balance between learning theory and hands-on clinical experience from an early start.

I would like to specialise in paediatric nursing or midwifery and provide the unique type of care that critically ill children need in hospital. Often children – and their families - have to spend lengthy amounts of time in medical facilities and I would like to brighten their days as much as possible.

UniSA was a great launchpad for my nursing career. After graduating, I became an agency nurse where I was able to gain experience across many areas, including intensive care, critical care and emergency. I now work in the GEM@HOME team where we triage and support elderly patients, including people living with dementia. It's a very rewarding job, where I get to work with a broader team of community, aged care and disability services, along with other allied health and medical professionals.
