Course aim

To introduce students to the concepts, applications, basic analysis and measurements in electrical and electronic systems.

Course content

Basic electrical quantities and systems of units.
Resistance and the analysis of resistive networks; Ohm’s Law, Kirchoff’s Voltage Law; Kirchoff’s Current Law; single loop circuits; single node pair circuits; series and parallel resistor combinations; wye-delta transformations; independant and dependant sources.
Nodal analysis; loop analysis.
Linearity and superposition; Thevenin’sTheorem; Norton’s Theorem; power transfer from source to load.
Capacitors and inductors; series and parallel combinations of inductors and capacitors; first order transient response.
Sinusoidal sources; phasors; impedance; admittance and phasor diagrams; use of analysis methods with AC circuits; instantaneous power and effective or RMS values.
Resistor, capacitor and inductor technologies; common circuit construction technologies; common measurement techniques.
