Course aim

This course provides students with theoretical and practical knowledge of the role and impact of business management traditions and systems in the Asian region on management decision making, business strategy, and business conduct in the international business context. The course explores socio-economic, political, cultural, institutional, and strategic management perspectives of different Asian management systems. In doing so, the course provides an in-depth understanding of how business enterprises in the region operate and the business strategies required to effectively work with Asian partners.

Students completing the course develop a body of knowledge that:

  • Contributes to a comprehensive application of knowledge of business management systems in the Asian region to recent developments in the field of international business management.
  • Provides a pathway for further learning.

Course content

Topics covered in this course include:

  • Comparative analyses of Asian management systems.
  • Culture, business and political economy of China, India, Japan and Korea.
  • Comparative corporate governance in Asia.
  • Issues and controversies on doing business in Asia.
  • Transparency, corruption, intellectual property law, role of government, corporate social responsibility and ethics.
  • Globalisation of Asian firms.
  • Japanese keiretsu/sogo sosha, Korean Chaebol, and Chinese Guanxi.
  • The transformation of China.
  • Indian business systems.
