Course aim

This course explores the socio-cultural dimensions of hospitality provision likely to be beneficial to students in their chosen vocational specialisation. It provides students with the opportunity to develop powers of critical, creative and reflective thinking that would assist in improved service delivery, to predict emerging trends in the consumption of hospitality, propose innovative practices to cater for changing consumer needs and to continuously improve one’s practice through reflection It also equips students with an international perspective of the hospitality industry.

Course content

Hospitality as a field of study and vocational pursuit; continuities in the history of hospitality provision; significance of women’s role in hospitality provision, structure and organisation of the hospitality industry, nature of service provision, socio-cultural dimensions of hospitality consumption; implications of hospitality as a performance; issues relating to internationalisation and cross-cultural contact in the hospitality industry; working in the hospitality industry, future of the hospitality industry.
