Admission criteria
The admission criteria have been grouped to assist you to easily find the information most relevant to your circumstances. However, you may fit into more than one and the university will consider applicants against each of the relevant criteria.
Certain conditions apply. For more information refer to Appendix 4 of the University's Selection and Entry policy.
Applicants are required to meet one of the following criteria with a competitive result, and demonstrate that they fulfil any prerequisite requirements and essential requirements for admission:
Recent secondary education
Meet any prerequisite requirements with a minimum grade of C- or equivalent
AND- Qualify for the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE), and achieved a competitive Selection Rank (ATAR), or
- Complete secondary qualifications equivalent to SACE, or
- Complete the International Baccalaureate Diploma with a minimum score of 24 points
Applicants who have not achieved the Selection Rank required for automatic selection may be selected for any remaining places based on the grades of their year 12 subjects.
OR
Higher education study- Complete or partly complete a recognised higher education program at a recognised higher education institution, or
- Complete at least four Open Universities Australia (OUA) courses at undergraduate level or above, or
- Complete the Associate Degree in Engineering at the University of South Australia
OR
Vocational Education and Training (VET)- Complete an award from a registered training organisation at Certificate IV or above
OR
Work and life experience- Qualify for Special Entry, or
- Complete a 12-month UniSA Foundation Studies program or equivalent, or
- Hold completed secondary qualifications equivalent to SACE obtained more than 2 years in the past.

This fast-tracked program of study offers an accelerated pathway to a master level qualification that provides you with an advanced level of knowledge in the specialised field of engineering management.
Mechanical and mechatronic engineering is a diverse field that can be applied across numerous industries – from robotics and automation, to manufacturing, automotive and energy. We recognise that diversity, offering a degree that delivers the integration of mechanical engineering with computing, control, automation and actuation.
As an engineering student you will have access to industry standard facilities, with UniSA ranked No. 1 in SA for engineering facilities1. Facilities include the Mechatronics Lab, Experience One Studio and Experiential Learning Suite.
By combining your undergraduate studies in mechanical and mechatronic engineering with a Master of Engineering (Engineering Management) you will further develop your skills to include managing the operations of an engineering organisation.
Our connections with industry will see you gain at least 450 hours of skills and competencies through the UniSA STEM Professional Practice Program, including placements, internships, guest lectures, industry panels, site visits and networking events. What you'll learn
Your undergraduate degree has a strong focus on real solutions for real-world engineering problems. You will learn to engineer solutions to everyday challenges, discovering the latest in robotics, industrial actuation and automation and machine vision.
You will study:
- dynamics and mechanics of machines
- thermodynamics and energy engineering
- mechanical system design and digital prototyping
- control systems and industrial actuation
- machine learning and autonomous robotics
A significant portion of your honours year will then involve a major project, where you will take the lead as an engineer in a project environment, working with industry, a government organisation, or an academic research area. You will also have internship opportunities in the final year of your undergraduate degree.
Progressing through to your postgraduate studies you will learn about the strategic management of engineering operations as they relate to managing an engineering organisation. You can study topics such as:
- robotics and automation
- energy management
- organisational leadership
- enterprise resource planning
- project planning and control
- strategic procurement
The UniSA STEM Professional Practice Program will allow you to apply the skills and knowledge attained throughout your studies in real-world settings.
Study hours
For each course you study, you will need to allocate time for various classes such as lectures, tutorials, workshops, seminars and practicals. Plus you will need additional hours to study in your own time to complete assignments, readings and projects, as well as to contribute to online discussion forums (independent study). So as a general rule, if you are studying full-time you would need to allocate 12–26 hours of study when at university and 14–28 hours of independent study per week.

Honours
This is a four-year, professional degree with honours. The honours component includes a minimum of one year of advanced studies in research and professional practice. You will receive First Class, Second Class or Third Class Honours, depending on your performance.
You will graduate with industry experience and connections, and a higher-level qualification than a bachelor degree. Your honours year is designed to prepare you for future leadership roles in mechanical design, advanced manufacturing and applied mechatronics.

This fast-track to Masters program enables you to commence a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (Mechanical) and secure a place in the Master of Engineering (Engineering Management) to be completed in five years of study instead of the typical six years, with the program granting you one year of advanced standing.

Overall, engineering vacancies have increased by 22 per cent in 2022 and shows engineering as one the strongest professions in demand in Australia1.
Careers to consider:
- mechanical engineer: developing products from small parts to large plant, machinery or vehicles; can work on all stages of a product such as research, development, design, manufacture and installation
- systems engineer: installing, configuring, testing and maintaining operating systems, application software and system management tools; managing and monitoring all installed systems and organisational infrastructure; ensuring high levels of system and infrastructure availability
- mechanical engineering supervisor: overseeing the design of mechanical equipment, industrial processes and robotics; supervising the production, operation, repair and maintenance of equipment; managing staff, resources and work processes
- mechatronic device designer and development engineer: designing machinery with electronic and computer control systems, such as power generators, mining and chemical plant machinery, aircraft, robots, motor vehicles or cameras; developing high-technology engineering systems that automate industrial tasks
- automation engineer: developing automated machinery and processes to complete exact tasks; developing technologies for production and delivery such as robots for packaging, food processing or car manufacturing
With the combination of the bachelor and master program there are additional career options, with employment opportunities in engineering consulting firms, construction companies, and local, state and federal government. You could consider:
- energy manager: monitoring and reducing energy usage; understanding where and how energy is used; highlight energy reduction across business, projects and work sites
- engineering operations manager: supervising and leading teams of engineers, scientists and technicians who work on projects; overseeing production and quality control; directing operations, testing and maintenance; planning and scheduling, client consulting, budgetary responsibilities
- quality assurance manager: working with management and staff to establish procedures and quality standards and to monitor these against agreed targets; writing management and technical reports; determining training needs; promoting change and improvement in performance and quality
- business development engineer: developing and maintain excellent client relationships; working with new and existing clients to create new business and identify new markets; proposing business ventures, providing project details, writing business proposals, meeting business revenue targets

I am particularly dedicated to incorporating social, economic, and environmental perspectives into tertiary engineering education to achieve sustainability in engineering practice.

How do I apply?
There are a number of ways to apply to study UniSA's undergraduate and postgraduate coursework degrees.
You can access our online International Application System through our How to Apply page. The International Application System is an easy and secure online application and acceptance process. You will have visibility of your application through the secure online portal with the ability to download offer documents, submit your acceptance and make a payment.
Alternatively you can submit an application through one of the University's registered Education Agents.
If you are completing an Australian year 12 qualification in Australia or overseas, or the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme in Australia, you must apply through SATAC http://www.satac.edu.au/.

Is there a closing date for applications?
There is no closing date for submitting your application however the admissions process takes between one and three weeks from the date that we receive your application and all required supporting documentation.

What credit can I receive for previous studies?
You may be eligible to receive credit or advanced standing for your chosen UniSA degree based on your previous studies, if they are in a related area at an equivalent or higher level. Receiving credit will reduce the number of courses you undertake within the degree, and may also reduce the overall duration of your degree.
The amount of credit you may be eligible to receive is assessed on a case-by-case basis by the Admissions team.
The best way to determine your eligibility to receive credit or advanced standing is to apply using our International Application System which can be found on our How to Apply page. You will need to supply detailed syllabus documents with your application.
