Admission criteria

The admission criteria have been grouped to assist you to easily find the information most relevant to your circumstances. However, you may fit into more than one and the university will consider applicants against each of the relevant criteria.

Certain conditions apply. For more information refer to Appendix 4 of the University's Selection and Entry policy.

To be eligible for selection, applicants are required to:

Qualify for the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE), and

obtain a competitive ATAR, and
meet any prerequisite requirements with a minimum grade of C-

Alternatively, applicants can fulfil one of the following requirements with a competitive result, and demonstrate that they fulfil any prerequisite requirements, and other academic requirements for the program:

Complete secondary education qualifications equivalent to SACE, or
Complete the International Baccalaureate Diploma with a minimum score of 24 points, or
Complete or partly complete a recognised higher education program at a recognised higher education institution, or
Complete at least four Open Universities Australia (OUA) courses at undergraduate level or above, or
Qualify for Special Entry, or
Complete a University Foundation Studies program

Possession of one or more of these qualifications, in addition to the academic entry requirements, does not, in itself, guarantee a place at the University of South Australia. Applications are considered on an individual basis and selection is competitive. Where previous study/work experience was conducted in English, the application must be accompanied by certified documentation from the educational institution/employer certifying that the language of instruction was English.

Aim

The Laws Double Degree will provide you with a professional level of education to pursue your legal career. Study in a complementary discipline will provide you with the expertise in another field and enhance your career options in a wide range of working environments.

Content & Structure

The total number of units required is 180 - that is, 40 courses. Those 40 courses are divided as follows between the two degree programs: 24 courses from the Bachelor of Laws program; and 16 courses from the Second Degree.

Eight courses (36 units) from the Bachelor of Laws program are not prescribed, enabling double degree students to complete the Honours program (36 units).

Rules & notes

Rules

1. The Laws Double Degree comprises 40 courses totaling 180 units and includes: 24 courses from the Bachelor of Laws program; and 16 courses from the Bachelor of Business (Tourism and Event Management) Degree.

2. Law Honours students must complete no less than two Honours Elective courses as prescribed, in addition to the compulsory Honours courses listed in the program schedule, to graduate with Honours in Law.

3. The law degree comprises: a) 16 core courses from the law discipline; b) 8 elective courses which must be selected from the courses offered by the School of Law.

4. Students not undertaking the Honours Stream must completed at least 75% of their final year of the program with advanced Law electives.

Notes

1. Law Honours is by selection and invitation, and students must complete the honours year as prescribed. Eligible students will be transferred into the Law Honours program.

2. Non honours students are able to take up to two level 8 (honours) courses as part of their undergraduate degree.

3. Students must complete the requirements of each degree as specified in the relevant program schedule to receive both degree parchments.

4. Students must contact the relevant Program Director for advice about their program of study.

5. Management electives can be used to complete an Experiential elective (refer to Experiential electives listing) or from the UniSA Business School undergraduate Management electives list. Course pre-requisites must be satisfied.

Professional accreditation and recognition

This program covers in a comprehensive way the academic requirements for admission to practice as specified by the national Law Admissions Consultative Committee and applied in South Australia by the Legal Practitioners Education and Admission Council. In addition to the academic requirements of the program, students seeking admission to practice are required to complete an approved practical legal training (PLT) program. Students seeking admission to practice in other Australian jurisdictions should apply to the appropriate admitting authority.
