Entry requirements
At least a three year degree from a recognised higher education institution, or equivalent.
Applicants are advised that a successful criminal history screening clearance is required for all students prior to their undertaking any professional experience/practicum placement that involves contact with minors (under 18 years of age). Information on the procedure to be followed for obtaining clearance will be provided with the letter of offer or may be viewed at the School of Education criminal history screening web page. These placements form a compulsory part of the program. A successful clearance may also be required for other courses, eg to enter any school, pre-school or childcare centre for any reason, including on placement, observation or visits, unless the students are already registered teachers.
English language entry requirements
In addition, international students who speak English as a foreign language must have obtained one of the following standards within the last two years prior to admission. Possession of one or more of these qualifications, in addition to the academic entry requirements, does not, in itself, guarantee a place at the University of South Australia. Applications are considered on an individual basis and selection is competitive. Where previous study/work experience was conducted in English, the application must be accompanied by certified documentation form the educational institution/employer certifying that the language of instruction/employment was English.

Aim

The program aims to develop skilled, committed and flexible education professionals who have the knowledge and pedagogical skills to promote effective and inclusive learning in junior primary and primary settings.

Content & Structure

The program is equivalent to two years of full-time study, comprising 72 units. The program includes core education studies, a professional experience (practicum) strand and courses in each of the recognised learning areas of the curriculum.

Rules

1. Students are required to work progressively through the core, curriculum, and practicum courses.

2. Credit will not be approved for any study undertaken as part of the qualification required for entry to the Master of Teaching (Junior Primary and Primary).

3. Credit will be considered for studies from incomplete awards and from completed awards over and above the qualification required for entry to the Master of Teaching (Junior Primary and Primary).

4. Students who have completed, as part of the qualification required for entry into the Master of Teaching (Junior Primary and Primary) a course which is equivalent to a Master of Teaching (Junior Primary and Primary) course may apply to take studies-in-lieu whereby they may enrol in an alternative course in place of a course scheduled in the program. No substitution of any practicum courses will be permitted.

5. Students studying part-time should ensure they are available full-time during school hours for the practicum within the courses Professional Practice and Reflection 1, 2 and 3. Dates will be specified in the practicum calendar on the School of Education website.

6. Students must adhere to the protocols for placement in the practicum which can be found on the School of Education practicum website.

7. The second half year of study in Year 2 is a 'professional' study period. In this study period students will apply the knowledge and skills developed in previous courses and during their professional experience placements, to preparing for entry into the Teaching Profession. As such, students will choose three of the four Education Studies courses offered in Year 2, SP5.

Notes

1. EDUC 4152 Professional Practice and Reflection 1 requires 14 days practicum in either a junior primary or primary classroom. This is to be made up of 5 introductory days and a block of nine days in either a junior primary or primary classroom. A co-requisite of one curriculum course is required.

2. EDUC 4153 Professional Practice and Reflection 2 requires 25 days practicum in either a junior primary or primary classroom. This is to be made up of 5 introductory days and a block of four weeks. Prerequisites are EDUC 4152 Professional Practice and Reflection 1 and all the curriculum courses scheduled for the first half of First Year.

3. EDUC 4154 Professional Practice and Reflection 3 requires 30 days practicum as a five week block in either a junior primary or primary classroom, with five lead-in days for preparation. The prerequisites are EDUC 4153 Professional Practice and Reflection 2 and all the curriculum courses scheduled for First Year.
