Admission criteria
The admission criteria have been grouped to assist you to easily find the information most relevant to your circumstances. However, you may fit into more than one and the university will consider applicants against each of the relevant criteria.
Certain conditions apply. For more information refer to Appendix 4 of the University's Selection and Entry policy.
To be eligible for selection, applicants are required to have:
Completed the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE); and
completed 200 credits of subjects;
achieved a grade of C* or better in the Personal Learning Plan, 20 credits of literacy, 10 credits of numeracy and
the Research Project at Stage 2;
achieved a grade C- or better in an additional 60 credits at Stage 2;
obtained a competitive ATAR.
* For Stage 2 subjects a grade of C- or better is requiredAlternatively, the minimum educational requirements may be met by those who have fulfilled prerequisite
requirements and achieved one of the following:
Completed the equivalent secondary education qualifications as required for University entry under SACE;
Completed the International Baccalaureate Diploma;
Completed or partly completed a recognised higher education program at a recognised higher education
institution;
Completed at least four Open Universities Australia (OUA) courses at the appropriate level;
Completed an award from TAFE or from another registered training organisation at AQF Certificate IV or above;
Qualified for Special Entry;
Completed University Foundation Studies program, Applied Science and Engineering stream;
Completed the Associate Degree in Engineering program at the University of South Australia.

In addition, international students who speak English as a foreign language must have obtained one of the following standards within the last two years prior to admission. Possession of one or more of these qualifications, in addition to the academic entry requirements, does not, in itself, guarantee a place at the University of South Australia. Applications are considered on an individual basis and selection is competitive. Credit/Advanced Standing for this program is only possible from 2014, therefore only first year entry is available in 2013.
Aim
The aim of the program is to equip students with the skills and knowledge required to function as an effective mechatronic engineer. This requires studies in the foundations of electrical and mechanical engineering and the integration of these areas to problems involving the design of mechatronic systems.
Content & Structure
The degree program provides students with a solid foundation in the necessary core areas of mechanical and, electrical and electronic engineering, computing and mathematics. It provides students with the opportunity to integrate these studies into the development of mechatronic systems in areas such as autonomous systems, robotics and industrial automation.
There is an emphasis throughout the program on preparing students for professional engineering practice and on the application of knowledge to practical engineering problems. In first year, students undertake foundation studies in computing, mathematics, mechanics, electricity, electronics and computer systems. Second year courses provide skills and knowledge in the theory that underpins electrical and mechanical engineering along with advanced studies in applied mathematics and computing. In the final two years of the program students will study courses which integrate the foundations they have learned and which provide advanced studies in areas such as embedded systems, control systems and mechanical engineering design. The final year has some electivity which allows students to select the specialist courses they wish to study in areas such as industrial automation and robotics along with a final year project.
