This course will introduce the fundamentals of engineering dynamics. It will develop the skills in how to model and analyse the motion of particles and rigid bodies as a foundation for dynamic analysis of mechanical systems. This fundamental course will also help develop engineers eyes to understand how machines work, and develop an engineering mindset to present and communicate work in a clear and concise written format.
Introduction to dynamics and vectorial approach to dynamics (with emphasis on planar motion).
Kinematics of particles, general curvilinear motio: frames of reference, trajectory of a particle and its position vector, definition and derivation of velocity vector and its rectangular components, definition and derivation of acceleration vector and its rectangular components and kinematics of circular motion of a particle as a special case.
Kinetics of particles: Newton’s second law of motion, linear and angular momentum of a particle and their rate of change, equations of motion, dynamic equilibrium, equations of motion in terms of radial and transverse components, Newton’s law of gravitation, trajectory of a particle under a central force, application to orbital and gyroscopic motions, Kepler’s laws of planetary motion, energy method and principle of impulse and momentum.
Kinematics and kinetics of rigid bodies: relative and absolute motion, absolute, relative and translational velocity and acceleration and coriolis acceleration .
