Course aim

To introduce students to the fundamental concepts, processes and lifecycle models used in the engineering of complex systems of all types. The course will introduce contemporary systems engineering standards and associated processes from a design and analysis perspective to enable students to understand how large-scale engineering development work is organised and conducted in industry.

Course content

Application of systems thinking and systems engineering to the development of complex, modern systems. Systems engineering standards (eg. IEC/ISO15288, IEEE 1220, ANSI/EIA 632) and their tailoring to suit a particular design problem. Systems engineering activities (processes) prescribed in SE standards (user needs, requirements analysis and specification, design, implementation, testing, operations and sustainment, disposal). Utilisation of contemporary data item descriptions for a select number of key systems engineering documents. Approaches to the technical evaluation of systems designs in a systems engineering context. Application of systems engineering methods to a system design problem at the conceptual design stage.
