To provide the opportunity for students to analyse the impacts of tourism on Indigenous Peoples and the economic, social, cultural, environmental and political motivations that encourage Indigenous people to engage in tourism.
Context of Indigenous involvement in tourism; types of Indigenous involvement in tourism; demand for Indigenous tourism product; what Indigenous product is offered internationally, nationally, state-wide and locally; motivations for Indigenous involvement including economic, cultural, social, political; motivations for tourists’ demand; demands for social justice through tourism and indigenous rights in tourism; policy and planning contexts such as set by the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Tourism Industry Strategy and the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples; management issues pertaining to Indigenous Tourism including the debate concerning community-based tourism versus individual entrepreneurship and co-design; Indigenous Tourism operations in the practical context of the tourism industry; potential of Reconciliation Tourism; the ecological contexts of Indigenous Tourism and particularly relations with National Parks; comparative analysis of Indigenous Tourism experiences from around the world; future scenarios. Engaging aforementioned theories and principles in the context of co-design partnership.
