Course aim

This course is designed for students to enhance their acquired knowledge to communicate geospatial information effectively and efficiently through a web browser. Students will gain skills in internet map creation, cartographic web map design, and communication with online maps.

Course content

This course is organized around active-learning projects. Course content includes:   

  • Web development and design as a means of cartographic delivery and communication.
  • System architectures for web maps
  • Web map elements
  • Design theory for web maps
  • Thematic layers (data overlays)
  • Interaction concepts - Human-Map Interactivity
  • Web map projections
  • Mobile GIS
  • 3D Web maps
  • Web map production (APIs, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript web map libraries)
  • Web-based spatial analysis
  • Evaluation of web maps’ usability
