Course aim

To provide an introduction to mechatronics, and develop skills in mechatronic design, including modeling, instrumenting, simulating, implementing and testing electromechanical systems.

Course content

  • Introduction to mechatronics, model-based design principles and practice.
  • Mathematical modeling of electromechanical systems (including sensors and actuators) in time domain and frequency domain.
  • Analytical derivation of a symbolic model based on electromagnetics and mechanics.
  • Empirical derivation of a numeric model based on system identification.
  • Instrumentation, data acquisition, and signal conditioning, including sampling, amplification, filtering, and analog-to-digital conversion.
  • Computer-based modeling and simulation of electromechanical systems using industry-standard tools.
  • Case studies on some common sensors and actuators in terms of physical principles and operational characteristics.
  • Integration of control, sensing and actuation in simulation and hardware implementation.
  • Latest trends in mechatronics.
