To extend students’ capability in spoken and written communication in English as an additional (second or foreign) language, at an intermediate-advanced level with a focus on performance in English of a range of tasks in their fields of interest.
This course introduces students to English as an Academic Language for the Professions. The course focuses on the development of English language skills required for particular professions, such as education, health and business. This course is useful to students who are specialising in the study of English and who intend to work in English-speaking countries. The course will extend students’ expertise in critical reading, writing and analysis, and other dimensions of research writing in English. The course includes intercultural strategies; professional vocabulary and terminology; grammatical concepts and structures; development of hypotheses and arguments; and text-types related to professional contexts e.g. memos, correspondence, oral and multimedia presentations.
