Course aim

To provide students with an overview of the major ethical dilemmas confronting journalists.

Course content

Introduction to ethics; journalism and ethics; ethical relativism; freedom of speech and censorship; notions of truth, objectivity and bias; invasion of privacy; deception; confidentiality of sources; chequebook journalism; trial by media; conflicts of interest; notions of inclusivity and discrimination; setting and maintaining standards; the Australian context.
