Course aim

To provide students with an overview of the principles and application of bioethics particularly as they pertain to the relevant biotechnology professions.

Course content

Philosophy of science and philosophy of bioethics; philosophical frameworks applied to moral and ethical issues in research; ethical issues arising from patenting of life forms; acceptability of applications of genetic engineering IVF, cloning and manipulation of organisms, ethical issues arising in research with transgenic animals; bioethics as applied to consideration of use of animals in experiments; bioethics as applied to consideration of use of human volunteers in experiments and drug trials; philosophy of value of human life, genetic privacy and counselling, gene and enzyme therapy.
