Course aim

To promote an understanding of the social, cultural and environmental determinants of health, with a specific focus on the health of indigenous Australians.

Course content

Using the Australian National Health Priorities as a framework, this course will present and explore concepts of health; common measures of health (morbidity, mortality, birth/death rates, Quality Adjusted Life years (QALYs) etc); risk factors, social , cultural and environmental determinants of health, proximal and distal factors affecting health; health status across state, national, international populations with special reference to marginalised or disadvantaged groups such as indigenous peoples; principles of health improvement (surveillance, basic/clinical sciences, intervention/ translational science, prevention/ health promotion). .
