Course aim

To enable students to design and analyse thermal systems such as power generation plant, renewable energy systems, refrigeration and air-conditioning systems, and minimise their environmental consequences.

Course content

Introduction to air-conditioning systems; Psychrometric analysis; Heating and cooling load calculations; Concept of Refrigeration and its applications; Refrigeration cycles; vapour compression, absorption, evaporative and desiccant cycles; refrigeration compressors, condensers, evaporators, expansion devices; vapour compression system design, analysis and simulation; Air-conditioning equipment selection; Duct design methods; Steam power plant operation, performance analysis and simulation; Design and analysis of solar thermal, photovoltaic, wind and bioenergy systems. Greenhouse gases and other emissions estimation, measurement and implications; emissions regulation and reduction; environmental issues.
