Aim

The Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (Mechanical) uses an industry focused, project-based teaching and learning approach to develop professional mechanical engineers who are well prepared to work in diverse, interdisciplinary teams to solve complex problems in a socially and culturally appropriate manner.

Content & Structure

This program requires completion of courses totalling 144 units, and comprises a common first year across all Engineering disciplines. The first two years of the program lay the foundation of mathematics, materials, mechanics, computing, engineering graphics, fluids, thermodynamics and mechanical design principles. In the third year of study, students will concentrate on a set of discipline core courses and a range of specialist electives from their chosen application area, including mechanical design, energy systems, engineering management, business innovation, as well as ship design. A project-based course is placed in the second half of the third year, which enables students to synthesise and apply the skills and knowledge accumulated throughout the program and mandated completion of the UniSA STEM Professional Practice Program.  Further advanced courses are offered in the final year.

There is an emphasis throughout the program on preparing students for professional engineering practice as well as on knowledge application to analysing complex engineering problems and to developing and implementing practical solutions. The degree develops professional engineering skills in a Capstone experience project, and research abilities in an Honours project, both of which spanning the full duration of the final year. Industry internship and international exchange opportunities are also available.

From 4 August 2025, the University of South Australia will no longer be accepting applications for new students. Study at Adelaide University.
