Aim

The Diploma in Languages enhances graduates' capacity to work as global professionals by developing their communicative proficiency and intercultural expertise in a major world language (English, French, Italian or Japanese).

Content & Structure

Graduates of the Diploma in Languages will have a broad and coherent body of knowledge in the language of their choice as a basis for independent lifelong learning. Graduates will have the knowledge and skills to live and work interculturally across languages and cultures and in contexts of linguistic and cultural diversity and the ability to apply the knowledge and skills in a range of professional settings. Graduates will have the necessary preparation and theoretical knowledge for entry into further study, as an initial step in the pathway for postgraduate research in the field.

Graduates will acquire an in-depth understanding of their chosen language and culture. They will demonstrate the cognitive and creative skills to exercise critical thinking and judgement in identifying and solving problems in a range of social and cultural contexts with intellectual and linguistic independence. They will demonstrate the communication and linguistic skills to present a clear, coherent and independent exposition of knowledge and ideas, with a particular focus on languages and intercultural communication.

To qualify for the Diploma in Languages, students must complete 36 units of study from their chosen languages major (English, French, Italian or Japanese) or other courses as approved by the Program Director.
