Entry requirements
Applicants are required to have:
- A completed four-year Bachelors degree in civil engineering or a related discipline from a recognised higher education institution or equivalent; OR
- A Graduate Certificate, or Graduate Diploma in civil engineering
Applicants who have completed a Bachelor degree in civil engineering; or Graduate Certificate in civil engineering, may be eligible to enter the program with 0.5 EFTSL Advanced Standing and complete the program in 1.5 years of full time study or equivalent part time study.

Applicants who have completed a Bachelor (Honours) degree in civil engineering; or Graduate Diploma in civil engineering, may be eligible to enter the program with 1.0 EFTSL Advanced Standing and complete the program in 1 year of full time study or equivalent part time study.

A related discipline may be other four year duration engineering or science degrees depending on the specialisation selected. Applicants who do not meet the standard entry requirements, will be assessed on a case by case basis by the Program Director.

In addition, international students who speak English as a foreign language must have obtained one of the following standards within the last two years prior to admission. Possession of one or more of these qualifications, in addition to the academic entry requirements, does not, in itself, guarantee a place at the University of South Australia. Applications are considered on an individual basis and selection is competitive. Where previous study/work experience was conducted in English, the application must be accompanied by certified documentation from the educational institution/employer certifying that the language of instruction/employment was English.

Aim

The Master of Engineering (Civil and Infrastructure) aims to provide graduates and current practitioners with an advanced level of knowledge and skills in a range of areas relevant to the structural and geotechnical sectors of Civil Engineering.

Content & Structure

The program requires completion of 49.5 units of core courses and 22.5 units of elective courses in civil engineering. On completion of these courses students should be able to:

Apply and synthesise civil engineering theories in solving practical infrastructure problems
Create and design models to be used in infrastructure design and analysis
Adapt data analysis methods at advanced level
Utilise advanced modelling techniques to solve a range of practical problems in civil engineering
Develop advanced skills to communicate with civil engineering and related professionals

Rules & notes

Notes

1. It is recommended that students complete this course prior to undertaking other Project Management electives in this program.

2. Students must have completed a fundamental course in Project Management prior to undertaking higher level project management related electives in this program. Fundamental courses include: Principles of Project Management; Project Risk Management; Project Control Methods; and Project Leadership and Teams.

3. Students must undertake both Natural and Built Environments Thesis (SP2) and (SP5). The order in which they take these courses will depend on the study period in which they commence the research project. The courses combine to provide 18 units in total of a single research project for the degree.

4. With Program Director approval, students may complete electives from the Water Resources Management specialisation.

Professional accreditation and recognition

This program is professionally accredited by Engineers Australia and is designed to meet the requirements for graduate membership of Engineers Australia and comparable international institutions through the Washington Accord. Such accreditation is provisional until the program produces its first graduates.
