Admission criteria

The admission criteria have been grouped to assist you to easily find the information most relevant to your circumstances. However, you may fit into more than one and the university will consider applicants against each of the relevant criteria.

Certain conditions apply. For more information refer to Appendix 4 of the University's Selection and Entry policy.

To be eligible for selection, applicants are required to have:

Completed the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE); and
- completed 200 credits of subjects;
- achieved a grade of C* or better in the Personal Learning Plan, 20 credits of literacy, 10 credits of numeracy and the Research Project at Stage 2;
- achieved a grade C- or better in an additional 60 credits at Stage 2;
- obtained a competitive ATAR.
* For Stage 2 subjects a grade of C- or better is required
Alternatively, the minimum educational requirements may be met by those who have fulfilled prerequisite requirements:
- Completed the equivalent secondary education qualifications as required for university entry under SACE; OR
- Completed or partly completed a recognised higher education program at a recognised higher education institution; OR
- Completed at least four Open Universities Australia (OUA) courses at the appropriate level; OR
- Completed an award from TAFE or from another registered training organisation at AQF Certificate IV or above; OR
- Completed the International Baccalaureate Diploma; OR
- Qualified for Special Entry; OR
- Completed University Foundation Studies program, Applied Science and Engineering stream; OR
- Completed the Associate Degree in Engineering program at the University of South Australia.

Aim

The program aims to prepare students for professional careers in mechanical and manufacturing engineering with an in-depth knowledge in mechanical plant design, manufacturing technology and engineering materials.

Content & Structure

The program has a foundational first year that includes an introduction to mechanical, civil and electrical engineering to give a broad engineering knowledge so that graduates have an extensive understanding of basic fundamentals and an appreciation of the diversity of engineering. Courses in second and third years are arranged to give the program a practice based emphasis that provides engineering knowledge in the areas of mechanics and component design; fluid mechanics, thermodynamics and sustainable design; materials and design for manufacturing; and manufacturing systems and engineering maintenance. The fourth year offers the opportunity for specialisation to equip graduates for future leadership roles in the areas of mechanical design, advanced manufacturing, applied mechatronics, sustainable systems and nanotechnology with particular emphasis on the manufacturing, defence, mining, mechanical design, automotive, and building and mechanical services industries. These specialisations each have a major individual project which is industry based.

Notes

1. This program includes elective courses. A list of elective courses is available from the UniSA website via http://www.unisanet.unisa.edu.au/BUGE/DisplayBUGE.asp?Year=2011. The selection will be subject to availability and satisfaction of pre-requisite requirements.

2. Students may substitute Intelligent Manufacturing Systems MENG 3010 for this course. Contact the Program Director for more information.

3. It is a requirement of Engineers Australia that students complete a minimum period of 12 weeks of industrial experience in a relevant industry prior to graduation. Assessment in the course Industrial Experience will remain incomplete until the student submits a written report and receives a pass.

4. Students who receive credit for prior learning in third and fourth year courses will be awarded a degree of Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical).

5. Students may undertake a mixture of courses from the various plans and would subsequently be awarded a degree of Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical).

6. If a student chooses relevant final year courses, they will be eligible to receive credit for up to 4 courses (18 units) in the respective Masters degree. See the Program Director for further details.
