To provide an understanding of the procedures required for discovering and designing, developing and testing novel drugs, and the use of novel drugs in clinical trials.
Overview the procedures and processes involved in drug design and development for clinical trials; disease states and the need for treatments; history of drug discovery; identification of drug targets through disease research (including pathophysiology and molecular pathways of damage); developing compounds to act on a target; current targets and therapies in development; regulated manufacturing of compounds; high-throughput screening; pre-clinical studies; research ethics (animal and human); moving from pre-clinical to clinical trials and approvals required; study flaws and level of evidence; importance of study design; and clinical trial management.
