Course aim

To examine theories, principles and philosophies of Islamic education as they inform Islamic pedagogy and evaluate the implications for diverse approaches to quality teaching and learning for Muslim students in contemporary classrooms.

Course content

Students will develop their knowledge and understanding of the purpose of education and the nature of teaching within the broad parameters of Islamic worldview conversant of the broader contemporary education context. Students will develop a depth of knowledge and engagement with conceptual frameworks and metalanguage that inform teaching and learning within an Islamic pedagogy. Students will appreciate that an Islamic pedagogy is inclusive, filtering and enabling, not only of the diversity and fluidity of thought within the heritage of Muslim thinkers, but the needs of students and the growing body of evidenced based best practice. Students will apply their knowledge to the critical analysis of approaches to teaching and learning within an Islamic pedagogy that demonstrates their ability to effectively align assessment, curriculum and pedagogy for Muslim students.
