Course aim

To critically engage practicing educators in examining theories of literacy with a focus on learner-text interactions and their application to contemporary teaching across sites and contexts.

Course content

In theorising texts and literacy, students will encounter semiotic, literary, sociolinguistic and technological theories. They will consider the implications of these theories for understanding how learners acquire knowledge and competence in using, producing and processing texts. In analysing texts and literacy practices in context. Students will develop skills of text analysis and apply these to texts across a range of contexts. They will consider the role of texts across the curriculum and encounter strategies for incorporating text-focused teaching into programs appropriately for different levels of learner. In building textual repertoires: Addressing challenges, students will consider factors which challenge and enable learners in building textual repertoires, including those related to students’ languages, cultures and abilities.
