Pharmacology 2

Course aim

To provide students with knowledge of the pathophysiology of selected organ systems and the mechanisms of action of therapeutic agents used to treat disorders of these systems.

Course content

The pathophysiology of key diseases affecting the major organ systems: integumentary, renal, urogenital, respiratory and cardiovascular (atherosclerosis, haemostasis and thrombosis, and anaemia) ; the pharmacological properties of specific classes of drugs used to treat diseases of these major organ systems; prediction of the likely adverse effects of a drug, based on the properties of that drug class; development of drug-drug interactions for specific classes of drugs; identification of classes of drugs contra-indicated in specific groups of patients and drugs with abuse potential, including ‘lifestyle' drugs such as performance-enhancing drugs.
