To develop an understanding of the fundamental principles of drug action.
Fundamentals of pharmacology including: mechanisms of drug action and toxicity; receptors, agonists and antagonists; drug tolerance and dependence; the autonomic and somatic nervous systems, and drugs affecting these systems; inflammation and tissue repair and pain mechanisms; pathophysiology of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis and the basic pharmacology of anti-inflammatory and analgesic drugs used to treat these conditions, including , steroids, paracetamol, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, opioid drugs and DMARDs (disease modifying anti-rheumatic drugs).
