Course aim

To provide students with an advanced understanding of the factors that lead to urban decline, the policy frameworks and agendas designed to regenerate these areas and the opportunities and conflicts that may arise through the enactment of such policies.

Course content

Students will develop knowledge of the processes of urban decline and examine policy-led regeneration responses drawing upon both domestic and international literature. Through case study analysis students will gain an appreciation of the complexity of such undertakings including consideration of social and cultural values and impacts in the conservation and regeneration of the urban environment. Students will undertake fieldwork in one or more sites having undergone or currently undergoing regeneration within South Australia. Collaboration with key stakeholders, such as local and state government, private sector organisations and community-based groups will provide students with an immersive, real-world understanding of urban regeneration.
