Course aim

To introduce students to the fundamental concepts of analysis and design of steel and timber structures, using an integrated approach to the design and construction of buildings.

Course content

Review of Limit state design and load evaluation. The influence of functional, environmental, aesthetic and economic factors on structural design. Analysis and design of steel and timber beams, tension and compression members. The design and detailing of connections for steel and timber structures. Use of design codes of practice.
