Catholic Studies 2: Theology M

Course aim

To introduce students to the active and critical process of 'doing theology' in the Catholic tradition, in educational settings and beyond, through the in-depth examination of core theological topics. The course method brings contemporary human experience into personal and communal dialogue with the Catholic tradition.

Course content

Students will develop their knowledge and understanding of the nature, origins, history and expressions of Catholic theology, especially in its post-Vatican II contemporary contexts. Theological anthropology highlights contemporary understandings of the human person as created in the image of God and radically open to personal and communal relationship with the God of Jesus Christ. Images and concepts of God are explored and evaluated according to Catholic theological principles. The context, mission and message of Jesus are analysed, prior to consideration of the community of the Church: its origins in First Century Judaism and its rapid early growth. ‘The Church in the modern world’ - as envisioned by the Second Vatican Council - is a major focus. The theologies of sacramentality and social justice are explored and linked, along with other contemporary expressions and challenges. The course also evaluates the vital implications of these elements of theology for contemporary Catholic school settings, including Religious Education programs.
