Course aim

To extend students’ spoken and written communication in English as an Additional (second or foreign) Language at an advanced level and to extend critical literacy skills in English as an International Language of Wider Communication

Course content

Students in this course will explore the historical and social as well as the political and economic circumstances which have contributed towards the internationalisation of English. This course will offer students insights into the relationship amongst English and other international languages of wider communication and also languages used at regional and local levels. Practise-based aspects of the course will offer students an introduction to the use of English in careers which include education, international trade, development, diplomacy and international relations. Students will become familiar with current agreements on the use of English, for example as the international language of aviation and maritime law, while also gaining an understanding of the role/s of other (international) languages of wider communication.

Emphasis will be placed on: research, analytical and critical writing and presentation skills appropriate to the international use of English.
