To extend students’ capability in spoken and written communication in English is an Additional (i.e. second or foreign) Language, at an intermediate-advanced level for academic purposes with a focus on the art of academic writing and speaking.
English 2A focuses on ‘English and the Art of Speaking and Writing’ at an intermediate-advanced academic level. The emphasis of this course is on writing and speaking (presentation) traditions in English for use in Anglophone countries and where English functions as an international lingua franca or ‘language of wider communication’. The course includes a study of how universal principles of the ‘art of public speaking’, ‘discourse’ and ‘academic writing’ in the contemporary global contexts of English have emerged from various earlier traditions and other language systems. Included in the course are: English as a lingua franca or language of wider communication; first, second, foreign and additional languages; a selection of the most famous international speeches delivered and essays written in or translated into English; and a selection of short stories and scholarly prose. The elements of exemplary speeches and essays are analysed in order that students may use these in their own presentations and essay writing. Genres of discourse and writing include: argument, and comparison and contrast. Students are encouraged to compare and contrast the discourse styles in English with their own languages or language repertoires. The course encourages students to appreciate the aesthetic, humanistic and ethical qualities of language in the social context.
