Course aim

To further develop students’ spoken and written communication skills in English as an Additional (second or foreign) Language at an intermediate level.

Course content

This is a course in English as an academic language for undergraduate university study at an intermediate level, which is necessary for university study and employment opportunities in English-speaking contexts (Australia and other Anglophone countries). Students are encouraged to reflect on language learning processes while they focus on the further development of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. This course introduces students to critical and analytical reading and writing skills, focussing on the genres of writing found in academic and professional contexts. There is an emphasis on expanding the student’s corpus of English [through key grammatical concepts and structures (syntax), vocabulary (lexis) and expressive use of the language]. Although this course is a companion to English Language 1A, students who have not taken English Language 1A are able to enrol and derive full benefit. This course is underpinned by bi/multilingual theory and methodology.
