Course aim

The aim of this course is to enable students to achieve the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC) national competency standards for the beginning Registered Nurse within one of the following nursing contexts: acute care, aged care, mental health, paediatrics, primary/public health.

Course content

Content covers the national agreed skills areas for undergraduate nursing programs. Examples of skills areas in this Experiential Learning Activity course include: Clinical interventions (preparing, assisting during and after care),clinical monitoring and management, communication and documentation, community/primary care to include health education and promotion strategies, coordinating care, cultural competence, managing challenging behaviours, nurse as teacher for self and others, evidence-based practice, clinical reasoning, management and leadership, supervisory skills, conflict management resolution, legal, judicious and safe administration, storage and disposal of medicines and IV products (including blood products), mental health nursing care: application of assessment tools, care strategies and interventions, personal care-provision and coordination of care across population groups (inclusive of Aboriginal and Torres Strait island groups), professional nursing behaviours (collaborative approaches to care, advocacy, scope of practice), models of self care, respect for privacy and dignity of clients/patients, teamwork and interdisciplinary teams, technology and health informatics incorporating policies and standards related to patient information systems, therapeutic nursing relationships (establishes, maintains and appropriately concludes relationships), understanding the different roles of RNs in different contexts, uses opportunities for learning (use of narratives).
